Can You Screen Independent Contractors?

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

There are some jobs that are part of the so-called "gig economy". This is the fast-rising set of jobs that are coming together as a result of certain economic conditions. A lot more people are working as independent contractors than in decades past. Fama social media screening recommends that even these types of workers get screened in terms of their social media profiles. They believe that independent contractors are perhaps even more important to screen than regular employees.

Screening Independent Contractors

Independent contractors are people who work in our cars, homes, and more. It is important to figure out what these people are all about before you give them the keys to your life as it were. You have to make sure that they do not have some kind of shady person coming into your personal property and doing jobs for you. This is the kind of thing that you absolutely need to know beforehand.

How To Screen These Workers

Part of the problem with screening for independent contractors is the fact that they are supposed to be independent from a lot of the normal processes that typical workers go through. This is to say that they are going to feel that they should not have to go through so many of the things that a typical worker does. They want to avoid a lot of the scrutiny that would come from regular employees.

The truth though is that there are many things that one can do to screen their independent contractors. For example, a social media background check is something that one can do on any employee including independent contractors. They are just as likely as anyone else to post on social media and make statements that one might want to review before they go about hiring.

Looking For Troubling Behavior

Social media can reveal a lot about what a person says and does in their life. It can actually show a potential employer a lot about what a person is like in their day-to-day life. It just might be the only thing that anyone can learn about an independent contractor before they get taken onboard. You might as well use every piece of information that is out there. You just might end up with the right person because you took the time to learn about them on social media.

Troubling behavior that one might put on social media would include things like bullying others, treating sensitive information with callous disregard, and even harassing others online. You do not want to see any of this happening because you could end up with someone who is going to disrespect your business and not take care of the people and the property that they are responsible for.

Look For Positive Signs As Well

Positive signs on social media are available as well. Someone who shows how hard of a worker they are is a person you might want to look into hiring. You might be surprised to learn that this is something that you can do. It is probably to your advantage to try to learn as much about them no matter what is out there, so take the good with the bad. Make sure you figure out exactly what kind of person you might be hiring.
